* Toll free numbers need to be registered and approved before you start using them. You can register your business through the TextP2P Toll-Free trust center application form. The process is free.
** Local numbers need to be registered and approved before you start using them. You can register your business through the TextP2P trust center application form. After your form has been approved your limit will be increased to the values shown above based on the brand registration you choose (sole prop, low vol, or standard). To learn more read about the A2P 10DLC process. The application process has a 1 time fee of $19-$59 and a monthly fee of $1.50-$10.
Multiple Numbers
Having more than one number is only allowed for A2P 10DLC standard brands ($59 application fee and $10/month). Numbers are pooled which means you do not get a choice of which number the texts are coming from. The system will stick people to a number so that's the only number they ever receive texts from. If you have more than one number it's recommend they be in different area codes. The system will attempt to use a number in the same geographical area as the recipient.
Local Numbers
A local area code number is a standard phone number used to send and receive SMS & MMS messages. Local phone numbers are typically called “long codes” (10-digit numbers) when comparing them with SMS short codes (5-6 digit numbers).
For sole proprietors local numbers are meant for person-to-person communications, and can send only 1-2 messages per second. They can be used for mass texting but your daily limit is less than 3000/day. For higher volume (over 3,000 per day) it's recommended you use Toll-Free numbers or register your business EIN using the A2P 10DLC process.
US businesses with an EIN are required to register using the TextP2P trust center either a low volume or standard brand. Low volume brands are limited to less than 6,000/day where standard brands may be greater than 6,000/day based on the trust score assigned by the Carriers.
Toll-Free Numbers
Toll-Free is used to send text messages from Toll-Free numbers (8XX) to other mobile phones. For businesses with an existing Toll-Free number, you can text-enable it. Having the same number for both voice and messaging means a better user experience for your customers.
Toll-Free messaging works best when your use case is person-to-person, such as customer support or sales, with both the sender and the recipient having a conversation via text. However, because Toll-Free numbers can support a higher throughput of messages per phone number than traditional local numbers, some businesses do choose to use Toll-Free numbers for one-way communications like alerts and notifications.
Toll free numbers also require a trust application to be submitted to the carriers but it's free of charge. You will not be allowed to send any messages until you have been approved by the carriers and process typically takes 1-2 weeks. After you have been approved, you will be able to send unlimited text messages per day, but it should be consistent with the number you applied for.
Valid Toll-Free numbers include: 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888, 822, 880, 887, 889
Registration is still required for all Toll-Free numbers when sending to Canada.
